„BACK TO BACK – Die sympathischen Rocker aus dem niederländischen Limburg“
Bravissimo! Mit der niederländischen Quo-Tributeband „Back to Back“, der belgischen Rockcoverband „HISTORY-X“, der deutschen Quo-Tributeband „Pure Quo“ und der deutschen Boogie-Rock-Formation „Railroad“ werden auf dem Status Quo Fan-Meeting, Vol. II, am 26. Mai 2018 gleich vier phantastische Bands live auf der Bühne stehen.
Doch wer sind diese Bands genau? Wer kennt schon ihre Geschichten? Das war für uns Grund genug die Bands aufzusuchen und ihnen auf den Zahn zu fühlen. So werden wir die Band-Interviews in den nächsten Tagen präsentieren und in loser Folge hier vorstellen. Unsere erste Reise führte uns direkt über die holländische Grenze nach Swartbroek bei Weert, wo wir Frontmann und Gründungsmitglied Joe Stals aufsuchten.

„Hallo Jo. Schön das du dir ein wenig Zeit für uns genommen hast und für unsere Meeting-Fans Rede und Antwort stehst. Joe, Du stehst seit vielen Jahren auf der Rock-Bühne und hast nach der damaligen Auflösung von „Quotation“ gleich mit „Back to Back“ eine neue Status Quo Tributeband ins Leben gerufen. Erzähl uns doch mal kurz deinen musikalischen Werdegang. Wie hast Du angefangen? Wo hast Du vor „Back to Back“ gespielt? Was hat dich musikalisch immer wieder angetrieben? Und erkläre mir bitte wie man so gut Mundharmonika spielen kann?“
Jo Stals (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „BACK TO BACK“):
„Angefangen hab ich in den frühen 80er. Mit der Gitarre ging es erst akustisch los, aber es folgte schnell auch die elektrische Gitarre. 1985 hatte ich meinen ersten Auftritt mit einen neuen Band. Wir waren alle Freunde. Musiktechnisch war das nichts Besonderes, wir spielten hauptsächlich Covers von „Status Quo“ und der niederländische Band „Normaal“. Nach zwei Jahren war das dann vorbei. Dann wurde ich Mitglied der Band „Stoolgang“. Wir machten Covers von Quo, John Mellencamp, Outlaws, Neil Young und so weiter. Meine Frau Petra war Sängerin in der Band. Die Band besteht immer noch, aber heute spielen sie nur noch Blues.
In den frühen 90er starteten wir mit einer neuen Band mit dem Namen „Route 66“. Auch hier spielten wir natürlich Quo, aber auch CCR, Guns and Roses, Black Crowes, Clapton u.s.w. 1995 haben wir dann die Band wieder aufgelöst. Danach habe ich viele Jahre nicht mehr gespielt. Ich war Fernfahrer, bin durch halb Europa gefahren und war dementsprechend nicht viel zu Hause. Aber ich hatte immer meine Gitarre dabei. In dieser Zeit habe ich mir auch eine Mundharmonika gekauft und mir das Spielen selbst beigebracht. Dann habe ich Anfang 2000 einige Jahre in einem akustischen Trio gespielt. Aber das war nur zur Karnevals-Session. In 2013 habe ich dann bei der niederländischen Quo tribute „Stetus Kwoo“ gespielt, das klappte sehr gut.„

„Das klingt alles interessant. Wie ging es dann weiter?“
Jo Stals (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „BACK TO BACK“):
„Am nächsten Tag ging ich nach John Coghlan’s Quo in Reuver (NL) und kam dort vor dem Gig mit Baz Barry ins Gespräch. Zu aller Überraschung hat er mich dann gefragt, ob ich zwei Tage mitspielen wollte. Natürlich habe ich gleich zugesagt, wann bekommt man schon mal so eine Chance mit einem echten „Frantic Four-Mitglied“ mitzuspielen. Dann hatten die Jungs von „Quotation“ mich gefragt ob ich die Band kommen will. Das habe ich dann auch getan und war dort bis 2016, wo „Quotation“ dann beendet wurde. Aber ich wollte da nicht aufhören und hatte mir vorgenommen, eine neue Quo Tributeband zu gründen, wo ich dann aber Gitarre spiele.“

„Tja und wir sind natürlich bestens informiert über dich und wissen das Du im August im Belgischen Bree sage und schreibe das 12. Mal als Gastmusiker bei John Coghlans Quo spielst. Du musst das Gründungsmitglied also ordentlich überzeugt haben mit deinen Mundharmonika-Fähigkeiten…?“

„Das ist unglaublich wie gut du informiert bist. Es ist tatsächlich das 12. Mal und ja, ich kann hier ganz ehrlich und offen sagen das ich darauf sehr stolz bin.“

„In ein paar Wochen beginnt die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft in Russland und die Niederlande ist nicht dabei. Was ist da passiert? Kannst Du uns das bitte mal erklären?“

„Ja, Ja, ich wusste das eine solche Frage kommen wird. Wir müssen deshalb viel Spott ertragen. Es ist ein großes Desaster das wir nicht dabei sind, aber mit dem Fußball haben wir es auch nicht verdient. Lass uns lieber über die Musik sprechen (…lacht….) …

„Du hast einige Jahre bei „Quotation“ gespielt, die Ende 2016 erst mal die Band auflösten, inzwischen aber durch Alex Akkermans wieder mit neuen Mitgliedern neugegründet wurden. In der Zwischenzeit hast Du selbst Initiative ergriffen und mit „Back to Back“ eine neue Status Quo Tributeband gegründet. Mit Hans Lemmen (Drums), Daniel Roumen (Guitar) und Frenk Aenderoomer (Bass) hast du schnell begabte und banderprobte Mitspieler gefunden, die ein solches Projekt einfach braucht. Stell uns doch mal deine Crew vor? Was haben die Jungs für Rituale oder komische Angewohnheiten? Wo kommen sie her? Was ist außergewöhnlich und was schätzt du besonders bei Hans, Daniel und Frenk?“

„Mit Hans war ich schon längere seit befreundet und wir waren uns schnell einig, dass wir nach dem Ende von „Quotation“ mit einer neuen Quo Tributeband anfangen. Hans ist ein guter Drummer mit viel Erfahrung und hat einen gute Backingvocal-Stimme. Frenk ist ein toller Bassplayer mit einer richtigen Lancaster-Stimme, die jede Quo Tributeband haben will. Er ist schon fast 40 Jahre in der Rockszene aktiv. Mit Hans und Frenk hat „Back to Back“ die beste Rhythmus-Session die man sich wünschen kann. Das ist sicherlich für eine Quo Tributeband sehr wichtig.
Mit Daniel haben wir einen Frontmann der einen sehr guten Gesang hat und ein prima Gitarrist ist. Er hat das Gefühl und den Draht zum Publikum und dann hat er auch noch eine tolle „Rossi-Ausstrahlung“. Wir kommen alle aus Limburg, der südlichsten holländischen Provinz und wir treffen uns auch außerhalb der Band. Meist besuchen wir Konzerte wo unsere Frauen mit dabei sind.“

„Jo, obwohl ihr alle erfahrene Musiker seid, ist der Anfang und Beginn einer neuen Band immer etwas ganz Besonderes. Beschreibe uns mal was in euren Köpfen vor ging, als ihr die ersten Auftritte vor der Brust hattet und mit Bravour meisterten. Und gibt es einen Ort an dem ihr gerne mal spielen würdet?“
Jo Stals (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „BACK TO BACK“):
„Am Anfang von „Back to Back“ waren wir natürlich neugierig und auch unsicher wie sich das alles entwickelt. Wir mussten ja sehen ob es wirklich Zukunft hat. Und natürlich waren wir vor dem ersten Gig aufgeregt und gespannt wie alles läuft. Es ist dann aber sehr gut gelaufen und wir bekamen sehr viele positive Reaktionen. Und dann wurde es von Gig zu Gig immer besser. Wo wir gerne spielen würden? Das ist eine gute Frage, Werner. Das Wembley Stadion wäre toll (…lacht…), nein, Spaß beiseite. Ein Status Quo Fan-Meeting ist toll, auch die Convention in Minehead ist fantastisch, aber das liegt alles nicht in unseren Händen.“

„Jo, wie zu hören war musst du jetzt erst mal gesundheitlich etwas kürzer treten. Wir hoffen das alles wieder in die Reihe kommt und das Du beim Meeting auch mit dabei sein wirst.“

„Das ist richtig. Ich muss die nächste Zeit aus gesundheitlichen Gründen etwas kürzer treten, aber ich werde beim Meeting dabei sein. Freundlicherweise hat sich mein Freund Edwin Kappe, der jahrelang bei der ehemaligen Status Quo Tributeband „Stetus Kwoo“ gespielt hat, sofort bereit erklärt, meinen Gitarrenpart für die nächsten Wochen zu übernehmen. Ich werde aber weiterhin die Mundharmonika spielen, so lange bis ich wieder richtig fit bin.“

„Jetzt steht ihr am 26. Mai 2018 das erste Mal beim Status Quo Fan-Meeting in Zülpich auf der Bühne. Wie sieht das aus, wie denkt ihr als Musiker über eine solche Veranstaltung? Ist es für euch eine besondere Herausforderung vor diesen ausrastenden Quo-Fans zu spielen?“

„Das man uns bereits nach dem zweiten Auftritt gefragt hat, um auf dem deutschen Fan-Meeting zu spielen, das macht uns natürlich stolz. Das ist schon was Besonderes, weil du da vor echten 100%igen Quo-Fans spielst. So etwas ist immer schön. Wir freuen uns auch auf die anderen Bands die dort spielen werden.“

„BACK TO BACK – The sympathetic rockers from the Dutch Limburg“
Bravissimo! The Dutch Quo tribute band „Back to Back“, the Belgian rock band „HISTORY-X“, the German Quo tribute band „Pure Quo“ and the German boogie rock band „Railroad“ will be present at the Status Quo Fan Meeting, Vol. II, on 26th May 2018, four fantastic bands live on stage. But who are these bands exactly? Who knows their stories? That was reason enough for us to visit the bands and feel them on the tooth. So we will present the band interviews in the next days and introduce them here in a loose sequence. Our journey took us directly over the Dutch border to Swartbroek near Weert, where we visited BtB-frontman and founding member Jo Stals.

„Hello Jo. Nice that you took a little time for us and our meeting fans answered questions. Joe, you’ve been on the rock stage for many years and after the release of „Quotation“ you’ve created a new Status Quo tribute band with „Back to Back“. Just tell us your musical career. How did you start? Where did you play before „Back to Back“? What has always driven you musically? And please tell me how to play harmonica so well?“
Jo Stals (founding member and frontman „BACK TO BACK“):
„I started in the early 80’s. The guitar began at first acoustically, but soon followed the electric guitar. In 1985 I had my first gig with a new band. We were all friends. From a musical point of view, it was nothing special, we played mainly covers of „Status Quo“ and the Dutch band „Normaal“. It was over after two years. Then I became a member of the band „Stoolgang“. We did covers from Quo, John Mellencamp, Outlaws, Neil Young and so on. My wife Petra was a singer in the band. The band still exists, but today they only play blues.
In the early 90’s we started with a new band called „Route 66“. Of course we also played Quo, but also CCR, Guns and Roses, Black Crowes, Clapton and so on. In 1995 we dissolved the band again. After that I did not play for many years. I was a truck driver, drove through half of Europe and was therefore not much at home. But I always had my guitar with me. During this time I also bought a harmonica and taught myself how to play. At the beginning of 2000 I played a few years in an acoustic trio. But that was only for the carnival session. In 2013 I played in the Dutch Quo Tribute „Stetus Kwoo“, which went very well.„

„That sounds interesting. What happened then?“

„The next day I went to John Coghlan’s Quo in Reuver (NL) and got into conversation with Baz Barry before the gig. To everyone’s surprise, he then asked me if I wanted to play two days. Of course, I immediately agreed, when do you ever get such a chance to play along with John a real „Frantic Four member“. Then the guys from „Quotation“ asked me if I want to come to the band. I did that too and stayed there until 2016, when „Quotation“ was finished. But I did not want to stop there and had decided to found a new Quo tribute band, but then I play the guitar.“

„Well and of course we are very well informed about you and know that you are playing the 12th time as a guest musician on John Coghlan´s Quo in August in Belgian Bree. So you have to have the founding member properly convinced with your harmonica skills…?“

„That´s unbelievable how well informed you are. It is indeed the 12th time and yes, I can honestly and openly say that I am very proud of it.“

“In a few weeks the World Cup in Russia will start and the Netherlands will not be there. What has happened there? Could you please explain that to us?”

“Yes, yes, I knew that such a question will come. We therefore have to endure a lot of ridicule. It is a big disaster that we are not there, but we do not deserve football. Let’s better talk about the music (laughs ….) …”

„You’ve been playing „Quotation“ for a couple of years, but at the end of 2016 they first broke up the band, but in the meantime Alex Akkermans re-founded it with new members. In the meantime, you have taken initiative and founded a new Status Quo tribute band „Back to Back“. With Hans Lemmen (drums), Daniel Roumen (guitar) and Frenk Aenderoomer (bass) you quickly found talented and band-tested players who simply need such a project. Just imagine your crew? What do the boys have for rituals or funny habits? Where are they from? What is extraordinary and what do you particularly appreciate about Hans, Daniel and Frenk?“
Jo Stals (founding member and frontman „BACK TO BACK“):
„I had been friends with Hans for a long time and we quickly agreed that we would start with a new Quo Tribute Band after the end of „Quotation“. Hans is a good drummer with a lot of experience and a good background voice. Frenk is a great bass player with a real Lancaster voice that every Quo Tribute Band wants. He has been active in the rock scene for almost 40 years. With Hans and Frenk „Back to Back“ has the best rhythm session that you could wish for. This is certainly very important for a Quo Tribute Band.
With Daniel we have a front man who has a very good vocals and is a great guitarist. He has the feeling and the connection to the audience and then he has a great „Rossi charisma“ too. We all come from Limburg, the southernmost province of the Netherlands, and we also meet outside the band. We usually go to concerts where our women are with us.“

„Jo, although you are all experienced musicians, the beginning and the beginning of a new band is always something very special. Describe something in your mind when you first performed in front of the chest and mastered it with flying colors. And is there a place where you would like to play?“
Jo Stals (founding member and frontman „BACK TO BACK“):
„At the beginning of „Back to Back“ we were of course curious and unsure how everything develops. We had to see if there really is a future. And of course we were curious before the first gig and curious how everything goes. But then it went very well and we got a lot of positive reactions. And then it got better and better from concert to concert. Where do we want to play? That’s a good question, Werner. The Wembley Stadium would be great (… laugh …), no, joking aside. A Status Quo fan meeting is great, the convention in Minehead is great, but that’s not in our hands.“

“Jo, as we could hear, you have to get a bit shorter now cause health reasons. We hope that everything will turn out again and that you will be there at the meeting.”

“That’s right. I’m going to have to slow down a little bit the next time for health reasons, but I’ll be at the meeting. Thankfully my friend Edwin Kappe, who played for years with the former Status Quo Tributeband „Stetus Kwoo“, immediately agreed to take over my guitar part for the next few weeks. But I will continue to play the harmonica until I am fit again.”

„Now, on 26th May 2018, you will perform for the first time at the Status Quo fan meeting in Zülpich. What does it look like, as a musician, how do you feel about such an event? Is it a special challenge for you to play in front of these outrageous Quo fans?“

„Of course, we are already proud to have been asked after the second appearance at the German fan meeting. This is special because you play in front of real 100% Quo fans. That’s always nice. We are also looking forward to the other bands that will perform there.“
