„HISTORY-X“ – Rock-Klassiker vom Feinsten“
Bravissimo! Mit der niederländischen Quo-Tributeband „Back to Back“, der belgischen Rockcoverband „HISTORY-X“, der deutschen Quo-Tributeband „Pure Quo“ und der deutschen Boogie-Rock-Formation „Railroad“ werden auf dem Status Quo Fan-Meeting, Vol. II, am 26. Mai 2018 gleich vier phantastische Bands live auf der Bühne stehen.
Doch wer sind diese Bands genau? Wer kennt schon ihre Geschichten? Das war für uns Grund genug die Bands aufzusuchen und ihnen auf den Zahn zu fühlen. So werden wir die Band-Interviews in den nächsten Tagen weiter präsentieren und in loser Folge hier vorstellen. Heute sind wir im belgischen Genk zu Gast, eine kleine Stadt in der Nähe von Maastricht. Hier trafen wir den legendären JP Kok, Frontmann und Gründungsmitglied von der Rock&Classicband „HISTORY-X“.

„Hallo JP. Schön das du dir ein wenig Zeit für uns genommen hast und für unsere Meeting-Fans Rede und Antwort stehst. JP, Du stehst seit 50 Jahren auf der Bühne, bist seit 14 Jahren Frontmann von „HISTORY-X“ und hast über 1000 Gigs gespielt. Erzähl uns doch mal kurz deinen musikalischen Werdegang. Wie hast Du angefangen? Wo hast Du vor „HISTORY-X“ gespielt?“
JP Kok (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „HISTORY-X“):
„Ich habe mit Musik begonnen als ich 12 Jahre alt war. Meine Inspiration kam von Bands wie CCR, Ten Years After, Rory Gallagher, Chuck Berry und den Beatles. Und natürlich wurde ich von Woodstock 1969 beeinflusst. Meine erste Band war „Black Eagle“, nach ein paar Jahren war es „Johny and the Cadillacs“, dann folgte „Mardi Gras“ und ein paar andere Bandnamen, an die ich mich erinnern kann. Ich nahm damals 2 Wochen Gitarrenunterricht und den Rest habe ich mir bis heute selbst beigebracht. Von 1995 bis 2000 habe ich auch einige Songs geschrieben.„

„Wie kam es damals zu der Entstehung von „HISTORY-X“? Was hat dich nach so vielen vorangegangenen Jahren angetrieben? Warum habt ihr euch für die Musikrichtung der Rock-Classic-Cover entschieden?“
JP Kok (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „HISTORY-X“):
„Ich habe 2004 mit HISTORY-X angefangen. Der Name der Band entstand durch die historische Musik aus den vielen Jahrzehnten die wir spielen. Die Band bestand damals aus verschiedenen Musikern, die inzwischen alle durch die aktuelle Formation ersetzt wurden. Bei den vielen Gigs ist es für viele Musiker schwierig, diesem Tempo zu folgen. Die Band ist eine vollwertige klassische Rock & Rockblues-Band. Wir haben damals mit der Absicht begonnen, gerade die phantastische Musik der 60er, 70er und 80er Jahre wieder unter die Leute zu bringen, sie einfach aufleben zu lassen. Das ist unsere Philosophie.“

„Das heißt mit anderen Worten das an einem Konzertabend mit „HISTORY-X“ kein Rock-Klassiker fehlen wird?“
JP Kok (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „HISTORY-X“):
„Ja genau. Mit einer Setlist von gut 50 Songs bringen wir den Musikfreunden diese goldenen Jahre von großen Künstlern, Musikern und Bands zurück. Da wir uns alle mehr als 45 Jahre intensiv mit dieser Musik beschäftigt haben, versuchen wir immer das Beste herauszuholen. Wir möchten einfach das die Besucher einen tollen Abend und einfach Spaß haben.“

„An welchen Orten ist „HISTORY-X“ überwiegend anzutreffen?“
JP Kok (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „HISTORY-X“):
„Wir sind alle mehr als 40 Jahre Biker, haben aber wohl die besten Tage hinter uns (…lacht…). Wegen der vielen Gigs gibt es heute kaum Zeit selbst noch mal auf die Maschine zu steigen. Um aber weiter dabei zu sein und das Flair der vielen tollen Biker-Gemeinden auch zu genießen, haben wir uns entschieden, überwiegend dort unsere Musik zu präsentieren. So haben wir dann auch unseren Spaß mit unseren Freunden.“

„Was bei Deinem Gitarrenspiel auffällt ist die Tatsache, dass Du ohne Plektrum spielst. Bitte erkläre mir wie das funktioniert?“
JP Kok (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „HISTORY-X“):
„Ja das stimmt. Ich kann natürlich beides, mit und ohne Plektrum. Ich habe fast 28 Jahre immer mit einem Plektrum gespielt. Eines Abends legte ich es weg und begann mit den Fingern zu spielen. Nach kurzer Zeit fühlte es sich genauso an, als wäre es nie anders gewesen. Viele sprechen mich darauf an, vielen fällt das gar nicht auf. Mit ein wenig Fingerfertigkeit und natürlich Erfahrung habe ich diese Spielart immer weiter ausgefeilt.“

„In den vergangenen Jahren hat es immer wieder mal den ein oder anderen Wechsel oder Neubesetzung in der Band gegeben. Mittlerweile hat sich aber bei euch mit Eric Schepers am Bass und JL van der Berg eine Crew zusammengefunden, die eine unglaubliche Spielfreude auf der Bühne versprüht. Kannst Du uns die beiden mal vorstellen? Was haben die beiden für Rituale oder komische Angewohnheiten? Wo kommen sie her? Was ist außergewöhnlich bei Eric & JL und was schätzt du besonders bei den beiden?“
JP Kok (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „HISTORY-X“):
„Eric kam 2016 zur Band. Er war genau der Bass-Typ, nach dem wir suchten. Trotz seiner Behinderung waren wir in ganz kurzer Zeit bereit, gemeinsam Rock & Roll zu spielen. Eric hat 40 Jahre Erfahrung im Musikgeschäft, er weiß sehr genau worauf es ankommt, hat aber leider in vielen Bands gespielt, die keine Disziplin hatten. Und genau das, Ordnung und Disziplin, fand er bei uns, womit er sich schnell absolut positiv für die Band entwickelt hat. Und was ganz wichtig ist: Er liebt diese Rockmusik die wir spielen und geht darin richtig auf.
Unser Drummer JL kam 2017 zu uns. Er hat nicht ganz so viel Erfahrung, er hat zuvor in einigen Bands gespielt, aber er hat sich erstaunlich schnell in der Band zurecht gefunden. Er ist auch zu einem ganz wichtigen Bestandteil geworden.“

„JP, wer jährlich als Band über 50 Auftritte hat, also fast jedes Wochenende unterwegs ist, muss schon etwas Besonderes sein. Du hast mit deiner Crew schon an so vielen Orten gespielt. Jetzt steht ihr am 26. Mai 2018 das zweite Mal beim Status Quo Fan-Meeting in Zülpich auf der Bühne. Wie sieht das aus, wie denkt ihr als Musiker über eine solche Veranstaltung? Ist es für euch eine besondere Herausforderung vor diesen ausrastenden Quo-Fans zu spielen?“
JP Kok (Gründungsmitglied und Frontman bei „HISTORY-X“):
„Wir haben das Glück, dass wir immer noch tolle Auftritte haben, ganz besonders in Deutschland. Die Konzerte bei den Bikern haben immer ihren Reiz, weil wir dieses Flair lieben. Aber der Gig 2016 beim „Status Quo Fan-Meeting“ war schon was Besonderes. Obwohl es ja alles harte Quo-Fans waren, fanden wir es toll das unsere Rockmusik so gut bei ihnen ankam. Man muss aber auch sagen dass die Mentalität unter den Fans und den Bands besonders gut ausgeprägt war. Das hatte schon was. Tja, und gerade deshalb freuen wir uns riesig, dass wir bei der Neuauflage wieder dabei sein dürfen.“

„HISTORY-X“ – Rock classics at its finest“
Bravissimo! The Dutch Quo tribute band „Back to Back“, the Belgian rock band „HISTORY-X“, the German Quo tribute band „Pure Quo“ and the German boogie rock band „Railroad“ will be present at the Status Quo Fan Meeting, Vol. II, on 26th May 2018, four fantastic bands live on stage. But who are these bands exactly? Who knows their stories? That was reason enough for us to visit the bands and feel them on the tooth. So we will present the band interviews in the next days and introduce them here in a loose sequence. Today we are in Genk, Belgium, a small town near Maastricht. Here we met the legendary JP Kok, frontman and founding member of the Rock & Classic band „HISTORY-X“.

„Hello JP, it’s great that you took some time for us and our meeting fans answered questions. JP, you’ve been on stage for 50 years, been the front man of“ HISTORY-X „for 14 years and played over 1000 gigs , tell us your musical career, how did you start, where did you play before „HISTORY-X“?
JP Kok (founding member and frontman „HISTORY-X“):
„I started playing music when I was 12 years old. My inspiration came from bands like CCR, Ten Years After, Rory Gallagher, Chuck Berry and The Beatles. And of course I was influenced by Woodstock in 1969. My first band was „Black Eagle“, after a few years it was „Johny and the Cadillacs“ followed by „Mardi Gras“ and a few other band names that I can remember. I took 2 weeks of guitar lessons and I taught myself the rest until today. From 1995 to 2000 I also wrote some songs.“

„How did the creation of „HISTORY-X“ come about? What has driven you after so many years in the past? Why did you choose the genre of Rock Classic covers?“
JP Kok (founding member and frontman „HISTORY-X“):
„I started in 2004 with “HISTORY-X”. The name of the band was born from the historical music of the many decades we play. At that time the band consisted of different musicians, all of whom were replaced by the current formation. With many gigs, it is difficult for many musicians to follow this pace. The band is a full-fledged classic rock & rock blues band. At that time, we started with the intention of bringing the fantastic music of the 60s, 70s and 80s back to the people, simply reviving them. That’s our philosophy.“

“Yes exactly. With a setlist of more than 50 songs, we bring back to music lovers these golden years of great artists, musicians and bands. Since we have all been intensively involved with this music for more than 45 years, we always try to get the best out of it. We just want the visitors to have a great evening and just have fun.“

„In which places is „HISTORY-X“ mostly to be found?“

„We are all bikers for more than 40 years, but probably have the best days behind us (… laughs …). Because of the many gigs today there is hardly any time to get on the bike again. But to continue to be there and to enjoy the flair of the many great biker communities, we have decided to present our music predominantly there. So we have our fun with our friends.“

„What’s striking about your guitar playing is the fact that you play without a plectrum, please explain how that works?“
JP Kok (founding member and frontman „HISTORY-X“):
“Of course I can do both, with and without plectrum. I play with a plectrum for almost 28 years. One night I put it down and started playing with my fingers. After a while it felt like it had never been different. Many talk to me, many do not realize it. With a little skill and of course experience, I have refined this game more and more.“

„In the last few years there were always a few changes or new appointments in the band. In the meantime, a crew has come together with Eric Schepers on bass and JL van der Berg, who has an incredible joy of playing on stage. Can you introduce us to the two? What do they have for rituals or strange habits? What’s extraordinary about Eric & JL and what do you like most about the two?“
JP Kok (founding member and frontman „HISTORY-X“):
„Eric joined the band in 2016. He was exactly the bass guy we were looking for. Despite his disability, we were ready in a very short time to play Rock & Roll together. Eric has 40 years experience in the music business, he knows exactly what is important, but has unfortunately played in many bands that had no discipline. And exactly that, order and discipline, he found with us, which he quickly developed absolutely positive for the band. And most importantly, he loves the rock music we play and gets it right.Our drummer JL came to us in 2017. He does not have that much experience, he played in some bands before, but he got along with the band amazingly fast. He has also become a very important part.“

„JP, who has more than 50 performances a year as a band, so traveling almost every weekend, must be something special. You have played with your crew in so many places. Now, on 26th May, the band is performing for the second time at the Status Quo Fan Meeting in Zülpich. What does it look like, how do you as a musician think about such an event? Is it a special challenge for you to play in front of these outrageous Quo fans?“
JP Kok (founding member and frontman „HISTORY-X“):
„We are lucky that we still have great performances, especially in Germany. The concerts with the bikers always have their charm, because we love this flair. But the Gig 2016 at the „Status Quo Fan Meeting“ was something special. Although they were all tough Quo fans, we thought it was great that our rock music was so well received by them. But I must say that the mentality was very good among the fans and the bands. That had something. Well, and that’s why we’re so happy to be back in the new edition.“
