Alan Lancaster, John Coghlan and Bob Young gave the event an extraordinary touch – Yvonne Hanvey & the Convention team had a fantastic organisation – Brilliant: In 2021 comes Convention No. 4!

And they all came. A large army of Quo rockers from all over the world made pilgrimages to Butlins in Minehead in the southwest of England, where the Quo fairy tale began in 1962. The list of country representatives was endless: From Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and even Australia, they came to the British island for the big convention party, the „Mother of all Quo-meetings“. Many took a lot of effort, spent hours and hours on the road, shying away from either the financial side or the prospect of sleeping poorly.
And then they were all together: the great Quo-family and everyone enjoyed this extraordinary big family feeling of Quo-friendship that has developed over the decades and has become more and more pronounced. And no one was interested in whether you arrived with a Quo-T-shirt or a thick Quo-jacket or just wanted to be there. Everyone was welcome and wanted to attend this extraordinary fan meeting.
One thing became very clear: Status Quo lives! More than ever. And now for well over 50 years. Incredible! Back in 1962 when band founders Francis Rossi, John Coghlan and Alan Lancaster founded the band under the name „The Spectres“ and later wrote a fantastic world career in the history of rock music with Rick Parfitt and the new band name „The Status Quo“. They gradually became, without a doubt, one of the best live bands rock history has ever produced.
And for many music fans, they became a real trademark, a true religion, a myth that you worshiped and identified with. Half a century brought with it personal changes. And today Status Quo is still on stage and has just released their 33rd album „Backbone“. You can stand by the changes in Quo as you like, but one thing is clear: they deserve all the respect and appreciation that they keep rocking, that they continue what you’ve always identified. Honest Handmade Quo Boogie Rock. Status Quo lives!
Yvonne Hanvey and her team once again engaged a series of tribute bands. Outstanding cover bands such as ´Ryders Creed´, the Dutch ´Status Quotes´, the Unplugged-Conversation with Bob Young & Micky Moody, the German Quo-tribute band ´Piledriver´, the legendary ´State of Quo´, the one and only ´Rhino’s Revenge´, the brilliant ´Jackie Lynton Band´, the rocking ´Stated Quo´, the ´RPJ Band´ and ´John Coghlan’s Quo & Flexible Friends´ brought the venue (REDS) to the boil again and again.
The event was rounded off with an audience including former Quo drummer John Coghlan, former Quo bassist Alan Lancaster, who came from Australia, and the Quo songwriter, tour manager, book author and unofficial band member Bob Young. The event was moderated by the legendary Mick Wall in the usual professional way. The convention also included a big, exciting Quo-flea market, great merchandising, an incredible presentation of the Quo story, a Quo-quiz and many more attractions, making full use of every day was.
And best of all: no one was aloof. On the contrary: Lancaster, Young & Coghlan took all the time in the world for a missing signature in their own Quo collection, a photo or a small talk with the fans. The same was true for Jackie Lynton, who left his mark on the best Live album 1977 for eternity with the unmistakable announcement „Is there anybody out there who wants to rock …“. And the Quo fans were just over the moon.
For many, the reunion with old Quo friends was something very special. Many fans have seen countless concerts, have remained faithful to the band to this day and have met many like-minded people who have been infected by the literal ´Quo virus´. It’s just this indescribable sense of weirdness that makes up the much-quoted Quo-Family, the love of a special style of music that connects people, young and old, and what accompanies your whole life.
So it was not surprising that you meet at the meeting like old friends in the arms fell, felt many feelings of happiness and sometimes even a small tear for joy. Even if the time has not stopped with the fans, the love for Status Quo has remained. Linguistic barriers do not exist in this family, from the long hair of the past may have been a short haircut, headbanging with air guitar hurt so many a neck, the beloved T-shirts and jackets have over the years getting close, but it was rocked together until the Doctor came. Everyone was a QUO.
And of course Rick Parfitt was also a topic of conversation. Many fans got wet eyes today when they talked about when they reported on encounters or concerts where they could be so close to the best rhythm guitarist. The anniversary of Rick’s death will be the third in December. Rick was in the spirit at this extraordinary convention, yes he was there, you could really feel it and this meeting of Quo fans was certainly in the sense of him.
The final day then found a well-deserved conclusion with a brute finale. With John Coghlan’s Quo almost all the artists of the evening gathered on stage at the end. And finally, when Alan Lancaster tuned the ´Roadhouse Blues´ with his inimitable rock voice, there was no one left. Accompanied by an enthusiastic Bob Young, it was the culmination of the entire convention.
Who thought that the fan convention of 2015 and 2017 could not be beaten, had to realize that the current event once again towered over everything. On Monday it was time to say goodbye to Butlins and countless Quo friends. Here and there a few farewell tears flowed, but you could get over it, because the next Status Quo-Convention no. 4 for 2021 is already in the starting blocks.
Finally, a big thank you to Yvonne Hanvey and her convention team with Paul, Ron, Julie, Bethan, Gary, Russ and all the other diligent helpers who are not listed. Respect and appreciation for your tireless work. Thank you all for giving the Quo-Family such an incredible weekend.

Alan Lancaster, John Coghlan und Bob Young gaben dem Event eine außergewöhnliche Note – Yvonne Hanvey & das Convention-Team warteten mit einer fantastischen Organisation auf – Brillant: 2021 kommt die Convention No. 4!

Was war das denn bitteschön? Wer am vergangenen Wochenende Gast bei der Status Quo-Convention in Minehead war, wird diese unglaubliche Zeit im Leben mit Sicherheit nicht mehr vergessen. Zum dritten Mal präsentierte Organisatorin Yvonne Hanvey vom offiziellen Status Quo-Fanclub „From the makers of“ (FTMO) und ihr Convention-Team eine Veranstaltung, die in die Geschichte eingehen wird. Drei Tage mit fantastischen Live-Bands, einem kreativen interessanten Begleitprogramm und der Kontakt mit hunderten von Gleichgesinnten waren für viele genau das, was sie wollten und was sie auch brauchten.
Und sie kamen alle. Eine große Armee von Quo-Rocker aus aller Welt pilgerte zu Butlins in Minehead in den Südwesten Englands, da wo das Quo-Märchen 1962 begann. Die Liste der Ländervertreter war ellenlang: Aus Schweden, Dänemark, Norwegen, Niederlande, Belgien, Frankreich, Österreich, Schweiz, Deutschland und sogar Australien kamen sie auf die britische Insel zur großen Convention-Party, zur „Mutter aller Quo-Meetings“. Viele nahmen dabei große Anstrengungen auf sich, waren Stunden über Stunden unterwegs und scheuten dabei weder den finanziellen Part noch die Aussicht auf wenig Schlaf.
Und dann waren sie alle beisammen: Die große Quo-Family und jeder genoss dieses außergewöhnliche große familiäre Gefühl der Quo-Freundschaft, die sich über die vielen Jahrzehnte entwickelt und immer mehr und mehr ausgeprägt hat. Und dabei interessierte es niemanden ob man mit einem Quo-T-Shirt oder einer dicken Quo-Jeanskutte ankam oder einfach nur dabei sein wollte. Alle waren herzlich willkommen und wollten diesem außergewöhnlichen Fan-Treffen beiwohnen.
Eines wurde ganz deutlich: Status Quo lebt! Und zwar mehr als je zuvor. Und das jetzt schon weit über 50 Jahre. Unglaublich! Damals, im Jahr 1962, als die Bandgründer Francis Rossi, John Coghlan und Alan Lancaster die Band unter dem Namen „The Spectres“ gründeten und später mit Rick Parfitt und mit neuem Bandnamen „The Status Quo“ eine phantastische Weltkarriere in der Geschichte der Rockmusik schrieb. Sie wurden nach und nach ohne Zweifel zu einer der besten Live-Bands, die die Rockgeschichte je hervor gebracht hat.
Und für viele Musikfans wurden sie zu einem echten Markenzeichen, einer wahren Religion, ein Mythos den man verehrte und mit dem man sich identifizierte. Das halbe Jahrhundert brachte personelle Veränderungen mit sich. Und heute steht Status Quo immer noch auf der Bühne und hat gerade mit „Backbone“ ihr 33. Album herausgebracht. Man kann zu den Veränderungen bei Quo stehen wie man will, aber eines ist klar: Sie verdienen allen Respekt und jede Anerkennung, das sie weiter rocken, das sie das weiterführen was sie immer ausgemacht hat. Ehrlicher handgemachter Quo-Boogie-Rock. Status Quo lebt!
Yvonne Hanvey und ihr Team hatten auch diesmal eine Reihe von Tributebands engagiert. Herausragende Coverbands wie Ryders Creed, der niederländischen Formation „Status Quotes“, der Unplugged-Conversation mit Bob Young & Micky Moody, der deutschen Quo-Tributeband „Piledriver“, der legendären „State of Quo“, „Rhino´s Revenge“, der brillianten „Jackie Lynton Band“, den rockenden „Stated Quo“, der „RPJ Band“ und „John Coghlan´s Quo & Flexible Friends“ brachten den Veranstaltungsort (REDS) immer wieder zum Kochen.
Abgerundet wurde das Event unter anderem durch eine Audienz, wo unter anderem der ehemalige Quo-Drummer John Coghlan, dem extra aus Australien angereisten ehemaligen Quo-Bassisten Alan Lancaster und dem Quo-Songschreiber, Tourmanager, Buchautor und inoffiziellen Bandmitglied Bob Young zu Gast waren. Moderiert wurde diese Veranstaltung vom legendären Mick Wall in gewohnt professioneller Art. Zur Convention gehörte auch ein großer erlebnisreicher Quo-Flohmarkt, ein tolles Merchandising, eine unglaubliche Präsentation der Quo-Geschichte, ein Quo-Quiz und viele weitere Attraktionen, womit jeder Tag voll ausgenutzt war.
Und das allerbeste: Niemand war unnahbar. Im Gegenteil: Lancaster, Young & Coghlan nahmen sich alle Zeit der Welt für eine fehlende Unterschrift in der eigenen Quo-Sammlung, ein Foto oder ein kleines Gespräch mit den Fans. Das gleiche galt für Jackie Lynton, der mit der unverwechselbaren Ansage „Is there anybody out there who wants to rock…“ auf dem wohl besten Live-Album 1977 etwas für die Ewigkeit hinterließ. Und die Quo-Fans waren schier aus dem Häuschen.
Für viele war das Wiedersehen mit alten Quo-Freunden etwas ganz Besonderes. Viele Fans haben unzählige Konzerte gesehen, sind der Band bis heute treu geblieben und haben dabei viele Gleichgesinnte getroffen, die vom buchstäblichen „Quo-Virus“ infiziert wurden. Es ist einfach dieses unbeschreibliche Wir-Gefühl was die vielzitierte Quo-Family ausmacht, die Liebe zu einem besonderen Musikstil der Menschen Jung und Alt verbindet und was einen ein ganzes Leben begleitet.
So war es dann auch nicht verwunderlich das man sich beim Aufeinandertreffen wie alte Freunde in die Arme fiel, viele Glücksgefühle verspürte und manchmal auch eine kleine Träne vor Freude verdrückte. Auch wenn die Zeit bei den Fans nicht stehen geblieben ist, die Liebe zu Status Quo ist geblieben. Sprachliche Barrieren gibt es in dieser Family nicht, aus der langen Haarpracht von früher wurde vielleicht ein Kurzhaarschnitt, beim Headbanging mit Luftgitarre schmerzte so mancher Nacken, die geliebten T-Shirts und Jacken wurden über die Jahre immer enger, aber es wurde gemeinsam gerockt bis der Arzt kam. Jeder war ein QUO.
Und natürlich war auch Rick Parfitt bei allen ein Gesprächsthema. Viele Fans bekamen noch heute feuchte Augen wenn sie darüber sprachen, wenn sie von Begegnungen oder Konzerten berichteten, wo sie dem besten Rhythmus-Gitarristen so nah sein konnten. Dabei jährt sich der Todestag von Rick im Dezember bereits zum dritten Mal. Rick war im Geiste bei dieser außergewöhnlichen Convention anwesend, ja er war da, man konnte es regelrecht spüren und genau dieses Zusammentreffen von Quo-Fans war sicher im Sinne von ihm.
Der Abschlusstag fand dann mit einem brachialen Finale auch den verdienten Abschluss. Mit John Coghlans Quo versammelten sich am Ende fast alle Künstler des Abends auf der Bühne. Und als zu guter Letzt Alan Lancaster mit seiner unnachahmlichen Rockstimme den „Roadhouse Blues“ anstimmte, war niemand mehr zu halten. Begleitet von einem begeisterten Bob Young war es genau der krönende Höhepunkt der gesamten Convention.
Wer dachte dass die Fan-Convention von 2015 und 2017 nicht mehr zu toppen sei, musste feststellen das die jetzige Veranstaltung noch einmal alles überragte. Am Montag hieß es dann Abschied von Butlins und den unzähligen Quo-Freunden zu nehmen. Hier und da flossen ein paar Abschiedstränchen, aber man konnte es verschmerzen, weil die nächste Status Quo-Convention No. 4 für 2021 bereits in den Startlöchern steht.
Zu guter letzt: Ein ganz dickes Dankeschön an Yvonne Hanvey und ihr Convention-Team mit Paul, Ron, Julie, Bethan, Gary, Russ und all die anderen fleißigen Helfer, die jetzt nicht aufgezählt sind.
